# App Store Optimization (ASO)
## Keyword Research
Discover and evaluate keywords that drive app store visibility.
1. Define target audience and core app functions (primary use case, demographics, competitive category).
2. Generate seed keywords from app features/benefits, user language (not developer terminology), and store autocomplete suggestions.
3. Expand with modifiers (free, best, simple), actions (create, track, organize), and audiences (for students, for teams).
4. Evaluate each keyword on search volume, competition (number/quality of ranking apps), and relevance.
5. Score and prioritize: Primary → title and keyword field (iOS); Secondary → subtitle and short description; Tertiary → full description only.
6. Map keywords to metadata locations and document the strategy for tracking.
7. **Validation:** keywords scored; placement mapped; no competitor brand names included; no plurals in the iOS keyword field.
**Keyword Evaluation Criteria:**

**Keyword Placement Priority** (highest to lowest weight): App Title → Subtitle (iOS) / Keyword Field (iOS) / Short Description (Android) → Full Description.
## Metadata Optimization
1. Audit current metadata against platform limits (title, subtitle/short description, keyword field, description density).
2. Optimize title as `[Brand Name] - [Primary Keyword] [Secondary Keyword]`.
3. Write subtitle/short description around the primary benefit, a secondary keyword, and action verbs.
4. Optimize the iOS keyword field: remove duplicates already in the title, remove plurals (Apple indexes both forms), no spaces after commas, prioritize by score.
5. Rewrite the full description: hook paragraph → feature bullets → social proof → call to action.
6. Validate character counts; target 2-3% primary keyword density.
7. **Validation:** all fields within limits; primary keyword in title; no stuffing (>5%); natural language preserved.
**Platform Character Limits:** Title 30 chars (Apple) / 50 chars (Google); Subtitle 30 chars (Apple only); Short Description 80 chars (Google only); Keywords 100 chars (Apple only); Promotional Text 170 chars (Apple only); Full Description 4,000 chars both; What's New 4,000 chars (Apple) / 500 chars (Google).
**Description Structure:** Hook (50-100 words, pain point + value prop + primary keyword) → Features (100-150 words, top 5 with benefits, secondary keywords) → Social Proof (50-75 words) → Call to Action (25-50 words, clear next step + reassurance).
## Competitor Analysis
1. Identify 10+ direct, indirect, and category-leader competitors.
2. Extract competitor keywords from titles, subtitles, and the first 100 words of descriptions.
3. Build a **Competitor Analysis Matrix** — Keywords (title/description frequency), Metadata (character utilization, density), Visuals (icon style, screenshot count/style), Ratings (average, count, velocity), Reviews (top praise/complaints) — mapping which keywords each competitor targets and coverage percentage per keyword.
4. Identify gaps: keywords with <40% competitor coverage, high-volume terms competitors miss, long-tail opportunities.
5. Audit competitor visual assets (icon patterns, screenshot messaging, video presence) and rating/review patterns.
6. **Validation:** 10+ competitors analyzed; keyword matrix complete; gaps identified with volume estimates; visual audit documented.
**Gap Analysis Template:** keyword gap (e.g. "habit tracker" at 40% coverage → add to keyword field), feature gap (competitor lacks a feature → highlight in screenshots), visual gap (no videos in top 5 → create app preview), messaging gap (none mention "free" → test free positioning).
## App Launch
1. Pre-launch (4 weeks out): finalize keywords/metadata, prepare visual assets, set up analytics, build a press kit and media list.
2. Submit for review (2 weeks out): complete store requirements, verify compliance, prepare launch comms.
3. Configure review monitoring, response templates, and rating-prompt timing.
4. Launch day: verify the app is live in both stores, announce across channels, begin review response cycle.
5. Days 1-7: track download velocity hourly, respond to reviews within 24 hours.
6. Day 7: retrospective against projections, quick optimization wins, plan the first metadata update (2 weeks post-launch).
7. **Validation:** app live; analytics tracking; reviews answered within 24h; download velocity documented; first update scheduled.
**Launch timing:** prefer Tuesday-Wednesday (avoid weekends), morning in the target timezone, align with category seasonality, avoid major competitor launch dates.
## A/B Testing
1. Prioritize the test element: Icon (highest impact) → Screenshot 1 → Title → Short Description (medium).
2. Form a hypothesis: "If we [change], then [metric] will improve by [amount] because [rationale]."
3. Create a single-variable control vs. treatment.
4. Calculate required sample size from baseline conversion rate, minimum detectable effect (usually 5%), and statistical significance (95%).
5. Launch via Apple Product Page Optimization or Android Store Listing Experiments; run at least 7 days or until significance.
6. Analyze conversion rates, confirm significance, document learnings.
7. **Validation:** single variable tested; sample size sufficient; significance reached (95%); results documented; winner implemented.
**A/B Test Prioritization** (impact / complexity): App Icon 10-25% lift, medium complexity; Screenshot 1 15-35% lift, medium; Title 5-15% lift, low; Short Description 5-10% lift, low; Video 10-20% lift, high.
**Sample size (impressions per variant):** 1% baseline CVR → 31,000; 2% → 15,500; 5% → 6,200; 10% → 3,100.
## Before/After Examples
**Title Optimization:** "MyTasks" — no keywords, brand only (**8 chars**) → "MyTasks - Todo List & Planner" — primary + secondary keywords (**29 chars**). "FitTrack Pro" — generic modifier (**12 chars**) → "FitTrack: Workout Log & Gym" — category keywords (**27 chars**).
**Subtitle Optimization (iOS):** "Get Things Done" — vague, no keywords → "Daily Task Manager & Planner" — two keywords, clear benefit.
**Keyword Field Optimization (iOS):** Before (inefficient — **89 chars**, 8 keywords): `task manager, todo list, productivity app, daily planner, reminder app`. After (optimized — **97 chars**, 14 keywords): `task,todo,checklist,reminder,organize,daily,planner,schedule,deadline,goals,habit,widget,sync,team`. Improvements: removed spaces after commas, removed duplicates already in the title (task manager → task), removed plurals (reminders → reminder), added more relevant keywords.
**Description Opening:** Generic ("MyTasks is a comprehensive task management solution designed to help busy professionals...") → pain-point-led with social proof ("Forget missed deadlines. MyTasks keeps every task, reminder, and project in one place—so you focus on doing, not remembering. Trusted by 500,000+ professionals.").
**Screenshot Caption Evolution:** "Task List Feature" (feature-focused, passive) → "Create Task Lists" (action verb, still feature) → "Never Miss a Deadline" (benefit-focused, emotional — best).
