# Lead Magnets

Plan lead magnets that capture emails, generate qualified leads, and lead naturally into product adoption.

## Before planning
Search the knowledge base for existing product-marketing context first; use it and only ask about what's missing.

Gather: business context (what the company does, the ideal customer, the problems the product solves); current lead generation (existing capture methods and offers, current email-capture conversion rate); content assets (existing content to repurpose, expertise to package, internal templates/tools); goals (list growth vs. lead quality vs. education; target buyer stage; timeline and resources).

## Principles
Solve one specific problem, not a broad topic ("how to write cold emails that get replies" beats "marketing guide"). Match the buyer's stage — awareness needs education, consideration needs comparison, decision needs implementation help. Aim for high perceived value and low time investment: it should look worth paying for, consumable in under 30 minutes (ideally under 10), with an immediate actionable takeaway. Build a natural path to the product — the magnet should solve a problem the product also solves, or demonstrate expertise in the space. Keep it easy to consume: one clear format, mobile-friendly, no special software required.

## Format options

| Type | Best for | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Checklist | Quick wins, process steps | Low |
| Cheat sheet | Reference material, shortcuts | Low |
| Template (doc/spreadsheet/Notion) | Repeatable workflows | Low-medium |
| Swipe file | Inspiration, examples | Medium |
| Ebook/guide | Deep education, authority | High |
| Mini-course (email) | Education + nurture | Medium |
| Mini-course (video) | Education + personality | High |
| Quiz/assessment | Segmentation, engagement | Medium |
| Webinar | Authority, live engagement | Medium |
| Resource library | Ongoing value, repeat visits | High |
| Free trial/community access | Product experience | Varies |

## Matching to buyer stage
**Awareness** — educate on the problem: a checklist ("10-Point Website Audit"), a cheat sheet, an ebook/guide, or a quiz ("What Type of Marketer Are You?"). **Consideration** — help evaluate solutions: a comparison template/spreadsheet, an assessment, a case-study collection, a webinar. **Decision** — help implement and remove purchase friction: ready-to-use templates, a free trial, an implementation/migration guide, an ROI calculator (see the free-tools skill for interactive calculators).

## Gating strategy
Full gate for high-value, bottom-funnel content (maximizes capture, reduces reach); partial gate — preview plus a full gated version — balances reach and capture; ungated-with-optional-opt-in suits top-funnel education (maximizes reach); a content upgrade attached to a specific post is contextual and high-intent.

What to ask for: email only gets the highest conversion; add name for personalization; add company/role only for better lead qualification, accepting more friction; reserve multi-field forms for high-value offers like webinars or demos. Rule of thumb: every extra field costs roughly 5-10% conversion, so ask for the minimum needed. Frame the exchange clearly: state the value plainly ("get the full 25-page guide free"), show a preview (table of contents, a sample page), add social proof ("downloaded by 5,000+ marketers"), and reduce risk ("no spam, unsubscribe anytime").

## Landing page & delivery
Structure: a benefit-led headline, a visual preview/mockup, 3-5 bullet takeaways, social proof, a minimal-field form with a clear CTA, and an FAQ addressing hesitations. Delivery options: instant download (immediate gratification, no email verification); email delivery (verifies the email, starts the relationship); thank-you page plus email (instant access and email capture together); drip delivery for courses or series, which builds a habit. Don't waste the thank-you page — confirm delivery, offer a next step (demo, trial, community), include a pre-written share prompt, and recommend related content.

## Promotion & distribution
Add CTAs inline and at the end of relevant blog posts; post-specific content upgrades convert 2-5x better than generic sidebar CTAs. Trigger popups on exit-intent or scroll depth, matched to page content. Share snippets and carousel posts on social, and use the magnet as the bio/profile CTA. For paid promotion: lead ads for top-funnel magnets, search ads for high-intent ones (templates, tools), and retargeting for blog visitors. Cross-promote with complementary brands, run guest webinars, and get included in partner newsletters and resource collections.

## Measuring success

| Metric | Tells you | Benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page conversion rate | Offer attractiveness | 20-40% warm traffic, 5-15% cold |
| Cost per lead | Acquisition efficiency | Varies by channel/industry |
| Lead-to-customer rate | Lead quality | 1-5% B2B, varies widely |
| Email engagement | Content relevance | 30-50% open, 2-5% click |
| Time to conversion | Nurture effectiveness | Track by source |

A/B test ideas: benefit-focused vs. curiosity-driven headline; checklist vs. guide on the same topic; full gate vs. partial preview; email-only vs. email-plus-name forms; CTA copy ("Download Free Guide" vs. "Get Your Copy"); instant download vs. email delivery. Signs of quality leads: above-average email engagement, expected trial/demo progression, low post-delivery unsubscribe rate, and a good match to the ICP.

## Output for the user
Provide: a format/topic recommendation with rationale and estimated effort; a content outline (key sections, length, what makes it unique); a gating and capture plan (what to gate, form fields, landing page structure); a distribution plan (channels, content-upgrade opportunities, paid amplification); and a measurement plan (KPIs, targets, first thing to A/B test).

## Task-specific questions
What existing content or expertise could become a lead magnet? Where does the audience spend time online? What's the most common pre-purchase question? Is there a nurture sequence ready for new leads? What's the design/promotion budget?
