# Patent Analysis & IP Research

Define technology domain by working with engineering teams to articulate core technical features in patent-searchable terms: identify key functional elements, novel combination or improvement over prior approaches, specific technical problem solved.

## Patent Search Strategy

Construct search strategy using multiple independent approaches:
- Keyword searches with domain-specific terminology and synonyms
- IPC/CPC classification code searches for relevant technology classes
- Citation-based searches following reference chains of known relevant patents
- Assignee-based searches targeting competitors and leaders in the space

Execute searches across databases: USPTO PatFT/AppFT, Espacenet, Google Patents, Lens.org. Collect bibliographic data (publication number, filing date, priority date, assignee, inventors, classification codes, status) and download full specifications for relevant results.

## Patent Claim Analysis

Read independent claims first (they define broadest scope), then dependent claims (they narrow scope). Map each claim element to the technology under evaluation. Determine whether each element is present (literal infringement) or achieves the same function in the same way to achieve same result (doctrine of equivalents).

## Patent Landscape Visualization

Build the IP landscape map that visualizes density by technology sub-area, filing trends over time, top assignees by filing volume, geographic filing patterns, and citation networks identifying foundational patents in the space.

## Prior Art Assessment & Patentability

Identify publications, patents, products, and public disclosures predating priority date. Assess anticipation (single reference discloses every element) or obviousness (combination of references teaches all elements). Map citations to identify influential prior art.

## Freedom-to-Operate Analysis

Map product's technical features against claims of active, enforceable patents in relevant jurisdictions. Identify claims that may be infringed. Assess validity of those claims based on prior art landscape. Evaluate design-around alternatives that avoid infringement.

## Patent Portfolio Assessment

Evaluate defensive strength: breadth of claim coverage, geographic filing scope, remaining patent term, citation frequency (indicating influence), likelihood of surviving validity challenge based on prior art landscape.

## Claim Charts & Critical Standards

Draft claim charts that map each claim element to product feature or prior art reference with specific citations (technical specification, source code, publication). Every element must map; missing any single element means claim is not infringed.

Analyze granted claims, not originally filed claims (amendments during prosecution often narrow scope significantly). Patent status must be verified (active, expired, abandoned, under reexamination). Geographic scope must match markets—US patent not enforceable in Europe. All findings cite specific patent numbers, claim numbers, and column/line references.
