# Trend Analysis

Identify emerging technology patterns and assess their implications for product and engineering strategy.

## Process

1. Monitor signal sources: developer surveys (Stack Overflow, JetBrains, State of JS/CSS/Rust), package downloads, conference talks, job postings, venture funding.
2. Identify emerging trends by detecting acceleration—sustained month-over-month growth in adoption metrics.
3. Classify each trend on adoption lifecycle: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, laggards.
4. Assess structural drivers: technical advancement, cost reduction, regulatory change, or community enthusiasm.
5. Evaluate ecosystem depth: learning resources, hiring pool, commercial support, integration breadth, production deployments.
6. Identify dependencies and prerequisites: infrastructure, skills, organizational changes; estimate adoption timeline.
7. Analyze second-order effects: what technologies, practices, or roles will be disrupted, augmented, or made obsolete.
8. Compare against historical precedents with similar characteristics; note outcomes and determining factors.
9. Produce trend assessment with recommended posture: invest (high confidence), experiment (promising), monitor (premature), or ignore (hype).
10. Set review triggers for reassessment; track specific milestones.

## Technical Standards

- Assessments grounded in quantitative adoption data, not anecdotal evidence.
- Include time horizon estimate for next adoption lifecycle stage.
- Historical comparisons acknowledge differences between precedent and current situation.
- Risk assessment includes early adoption risk (wasted investment) and late adoption risk (competitive disadvantage).
- Recommendations account for organization's context: team size, risk tolerance, stack, priorities.
- Track emerging standards for trends depending on ecosystem consensus.

## Verification

- Validate adoption metrics against multiple independent sources.
- Check historical comparisons are fair and outcomes accurately reported.
- Confirm ecosystem assessments reflect current state (90 days currency).
- Review assessments with practitioners having hands-on experience.
- Revisit previous assessments to calibrate accuracy.
- Confirm review triggers are specific and automatable.
